Matariki

 

Matariki is a cluster of stars known as Pleiades. When the stars rise, it in the mid winter and it is the start of Matariki. This is the Maori new year. Matariki means Eye’s of God or  little eyes.

Ranginui the Sky Father and Papatuanuku the Earth Mother were separated from their children. The God of the Wind (Tawhirimatea) was so mad that he threw his eyes into the heavens.  

Matariki was a happy time. Maori planted crops such as kumara. Seafood and birds were also gathered. It was also time to sing, dance and feast. In the 1940’s Matariki celebrations stopped. In the early 2000’s Matariki celebrations were revived. One of the common symbols of Matariki was the kite flying. The kites were flown because it was believed that the kites would fly close to the stars.

Hook

On Friday, the last day of Miss Haslam teaching our class,  we had an Umu for the last day of Samoan Language Week. We had lots of food on the umu and newspapers. The wet newspaper covered the hot rocks and the food. Steam came out of the hot rocks. Deevon and his father and also Joseph’s dad went to buy some food for the umu. We all came to the court and  Mr T  started to lift  the samoan flag and sang the national anthem in samoan. The whole school walked down to the. And father said a pray and we all  hall and eat pork noodles and other food. 

We had Room 6 assembly. We saw them play the candy man song that was funny  when they dance once it finished. We went outside and Mr Tygrell told us some questions about the Umu and telling us that we are using newspapers for the stones to be warm and it was called hot rocks Similar then rocks then we went up to class and ate some food we all had to make one line i had ever food there and ate it all. It was smokey when we were Looking at it. After we ate we went out to play for the next 20 minutes and it was close to us going home. Miss Haslem and Miss Paton gave themselves gifts and Miss Haslam gave us kit kat lille pop lollies and chocolate.
